Printed Textiles

Name of Artist: Brain Mutarise

Date of Birth: 1981- Current

Printed Textiles        2009

Immerging textile designer, Brain Mutarise, portrays Afro-centric ideas in his textile pieces. One can see his love for African patterns, animals and adornment throughout his work. Mutarise chooses to be an original artist who indulges himself into his own culture and identity. His concepts and printed images are inspired by other African cultures including those of Egypt, Senegal and Kenya.

Mutarise was born in 1981 and has so far lived in Harare, Zimbabwe. He is the first born of three children and he has attended Blackiston Primary School before attending Ellis Robbins Secondary School. He has enrolled at the AEC College in Harare and has been involved in an entertainment consultancy.

The artist explains how he has had a colourful past. For him, art was a practical subject which he took from form one to three. As the possibility for him to write O’ level art exams did not arise, Mutarise could not pursue the subject. Fortunately, a few years later the artist found himself stepping into his creative destiny. After failing to find some one to print graffiti on his t-shirt, Mutarise found himself asking an expert about the process of textile printing. Before long, he had found X-ray films and was making a variety of creative stencils. Mutarise has since begun to design seat covers, cushion covers among many things for his family and friends.

The artist has sent work on commission or as presents to South Africa, UK, Botswana and USA. One of his best works was a lily design he created for a wedding isle. Mutarise looks up to his parents who are very supportive of his work. His aspiration is to be a full time artist and to improve in what he does.
