Permanent Collection
The National Gallery has a Permanent Collection that embraces works in all media and is largely divided between Europe and Africa. The European Collection consists of several significant Old Masters ranging from the 16th Century and also includes a selection of 19th Century works with some pre-Raphealite and Impressionists Works. The African Collection forms the focus of the collection and its completion forms the cornerstone of the Gallery’s Acquisition Policy. Presently the Current acquisitions policy concentrates on acquiring contemporary art and artifacts produced in Southern Africa. There is a permanent display of many of the traditional artifacts (Objects of Mediation) that comprise the African Collection, which is mounted in the North Gallery on the First Floor. The sculpture gardens at the rear and front of the gallery, contain a selection of some of the most fine historically significant Zimbabwean stone sculpture. The Gallery hires out to approved institutions works of art from the Permanent Collection thereby providing access to the National Gallery Collection.

*News on the Collection
Currently some works from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s Permanent Collection are out on loan to Eltham Palace in England under the auspices of the English Heritage. These works are An Astronomer and Patriarch attributed to Paolo Valiari and The King of Poland being received by the Doge of Venice. In addition, a work David with the Head of Goliath supposedly produced by Caracciolo a student of Carivaggio, is currently under investigation to determine whether this work could actually be attributed to the master himself.
