Permanent Collection

The National Gallery has a Permanent Collection that embraces works in all media and is largely divided between Europe and Africa. The European Collection consists of several significant Old Masters ranging from the 16th Century and also includes a selection of 19th Century works with some pre-Raphealite and Impressionists Works. The African Collection forms the focus of the collection and its completion forms the cornerstone of the Gallery’s Acquisition Policy. Presently the Current acquisitions policy concentrates on acquiring contemporary art and artifacts produced in Southern Africa. There is a permanent display of many of the traditional artifacts (Objects of Mediation) that comprise the African Collection, which is mounted in the North  Gallery on the First Floor. The sculpture gardens at the rear and front of the gallery, contain a selection of some of the most fine historically significant Zimbabwean stone sculpture. The Gallery hires out to approved institutions works of art from the Permanent Collection thereby providing access to the National Gallery Collection.

*Collection at a Glance
At a glance the National gallery Collection has a substantive number of significant European Old Masters including works by Paola Valiari Veronese and Andrea Cavaliere Piazza.  The Contemporary African Art Collection on the other hand contains work by Nigerian Twin Seven Seven, Malangatana of  Mozambique,  graphics by the late Zambian Henry Tayali, Susan Wenger and others  as well as a number of works produced by painters and sculptors by Zimbabwean artists. These include original sculptures by the late Zimbabwean Master sculptors including Henry Munyaradzi, brothers John and Bernard Takawira, Joram Mariga, Bernard Matemera, Nicholas Mukomberanwa and Joseph Ndandarika.  In addition to these, the gallery has a number of the earliest stone sculptures that were produced at the gallery’s workshop School during the 1950s and 1960s. Paintings produced during the pre-independence era form a significant part of the collection as well as a growing number of paintings and installations produced since the attainment of Independence in1980.

*News on the Collection
Currently some works from the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s Permanent Collection are out on loan to Eltham Palace in England under the auspices of the English Heritage. These works are An Astronomer and Patriarch attributed to Paolo Valiari  and The King of Poland being received by the Doge of Venice. In addition, a work David with the Head of Goliath supposedly produced by Caracciolo a student of Carivaggio, is currently under investigation to determine whether this work could actually be attributed to the master himself.

*Work outside the country
The National Gallery has a collection of sculptures that is termed the OVERSEAS COLLECTION. This is a collection of sculptures that it is able to travel overseas to represent the artists of this country. This collection is updated annually  and is a representative selection of current trends as well as artists from the Gallery’s student training workshop  artist-in-residence programme and  tells some interesting aspect of the story of stone sculpture development in  Zimbabwe. The present collection consists of a variety of works of art and is available to travel upon request…(ADD PICTURES OF THE 2005 COLLECTION)
