It is with no doubt that the visual arts fraternity endeavours to maximize the growth of upcoming artists. This week on YouSpace the Gallery is proud to accommodate a first time exhibitor Elias Makwarimba. Elias’s work comes with a new twist as he displays works that evoke a nostalgic feeling Born in Wedza, Elias acquired art making skills through immense ability to use his imagination.

As explained by Makwarimba, his works on exhibition are a result of a dream he had of rural huts that he believes reflected on the importance of our rural background. The bark used to build the small huts resembles the power of our origins and resourcefulness of the rural areas in shaping our culture and identity. Moreover, the drums, pounding drums and hoes are intertwined to represent work, food and entertainment. In rural communities these are fundamental components that shape the lifestyles of people. After a long day of hard work people eat and entertain themselves and this is supported by the Shona proverb that goes as “Ukama igasva hunozadzikiswa nekudya.”
