George Shire is a cultural theorist and historian of ideas who has been engaged with questions of knowledge and power from the global South; with visual culture and decolonisation; and with tracking the histories of art education in Southern Africa.
He is a member of the Norwegian Artistic Research Forum and Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Art at the Bergen Academy of Arts; a member of the Another Road Map Africa Cluster in Art Education; and an editorial board member of the journals of politics and culture, ‘Soundings’ and ‘DarkMatter’. For over a period spanning 35 years he previously taught at Richmond Upon Thames College, London; the Open University; Central Saint Martin’s School of Art; and the University of London.
He has lectured and performed internationally and his recent performance lectures have included the São Paolo Biennale; the ArtSearch Symposium in Johannesburg; and the public programme of the 10th Berlin Biennale. He is a DJ, jazz enthusiast and saxophone player.
