    Aims

    • To educate all sections of society on visual art through guided tours of   artwork on exhibition.
    • To remove the exclusivity surrounding visual art by making the NGZ user friendly to all sections of society.
    • T o develop a new generation of artist by introducing art to school previous denied the opportunity.
    • Equip artists with necessary knowledge that is essential for their growth and improvement of their practice.
    • Teacher advancements programmes. To provide assistance to teachers and to ensure that the NGZ becomes a resource centre for art teachers.
    • Implement outreach programme so that the section of society that cannot access the gallery is reached.
    • Liase with officials from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education on art education programmes.


    The National Gallery Visual Arts Studio

    The art school works in partnership with the Harare Polytechnic and offers a certificate in Visual Arts and Design. The programme is a two year full-time course. At the end of the course, students are awarded Short Certificate Courses in Visual Arts and Design. The first year is a Foundation Year, where students are taught theoretical material that is relevant to contemporary art making, whilst making reference to the historical trajectory and development of the visual arts. In addition, students are taught practical disciplines including Drawing, Printmaking, Painting, Photography, Design and Sculpture. In the second year, students specialize in one discipline in order to produce an independent project that they exhibit in their final year exhibition, which is held at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in December.

    Applications for January 2013 will open in October 2012. Prospective applicants must inquire at the National gallery reception desk for further information. Candidates must be able to support themselves throughout the duration of the two year course that consists of six semesters in total. Prospective candidates must submit portfolios with their application forms.

    Guided tours


    These are designed to encourage scholars and the general public to visit the exhibitions on show at the National Gallery, in an attempt to broaden visitors' knowledge regarding the visual arts. Guided tours may be pre-booked via the Department of Education by contacting the Education Officer on 704666/7 Ext 30. Booking forms are also available in the Education and Public Programmes newsletters, which are made available at the front desk of the Gallery.

    • A guide through artworks displayed in the changing exhibitions. This will be done through a questionnaire or self-guide.
    • A guide through the permanent collection of African artifacts in the Zimplats gallery.  A questionnaire with an exercise will be available for children of all ages.
    • Pre- booked guided tour to be arranged between the institute / school and the Education officer.
    • Groups who have not booked may request for a guided tour if the Education Officer is available.

    Pritt Holiday Art Camp


    The Pritt Holiday Art Camp was developed by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in partnership with Glue & Chemical Products Zimbabwe. This programme is facilitated by the department of Education. The Pritt Holiday Art Camp serves to provide the youth with a space in which to gain knowledge of the arts and develop their visual creative abilities under the guidance of a visual arts mentor. During the camp, students explore different mediums of art including painting, drawing and various crafts. At the end of the art camp, students are awarded certificates and prizes in recognition of their talent.

    The Pritt Holiday Art Camp is held every year during the April and December holidays and it is open to students between the ages of 6 to 18 years of age. Pritt holiday art camp dates for the April school holiday are 16 - 20 April 2012.

    Outreach
    **NB: Outreach and art clubs workshops are run by a team comprising education officer, art instructors and final year students.

    Reading Groups


    The Reading Group sessions provide a space in which students can discuss theoretical material that is relevant to Art as a subject, philosophy and practice.The Reading Group meets bi-weekly and membership is FREE! Readings are available on request via email or can be collected from the Gallery's reception desk a week before each session.

    24 February: Sculpture
    9 March: Rock Painting
    23 March: Fabric Printing
    6 April: Viewing artworks

    Saturday Art Classes


    Saturday Art Classes are held during term time in the Gallery gardens every Saturday from 09h00-12h00. These classes are open to scholars currently studying art as a subject or individuals who would like to sharpen their artistic ability with the intention to explore new dimensions in art. Registration forms and fee details may be attained at the Gallery reception desk.

    The Culture Box


    The Culture Box is an initiative introduced by the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. It is a collection of Zimbabwean traditional cultural objects that can be used to educate children and adults about Zimbabwean traditional culture.  The box is also accompanied by a book entitled The Material Culture of Zimbabwe written by H. Ellert (Longman 1984). The book provides detailed information about each object in the box. In addition, the NGZ Department of Education delivers workshops on the contents of the Culture Box.
