Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. It commemorates the event that is the stone of Christian faith, hope and promises eternal life. The painting titled Transformation by Lionel Davis illustrates Easter as a time of renewal, repentance and rebirth. A time when one needs to reflect on life and start a new beginning in Jesus Christ. This exhibition brings together the works from the Permanent Collection creating an interesting and significant collection of work. The display includes a variety of sculptures and paintings, utilizing different techniques with each artist taking inspiration to complement each their narration. Other works that are on display include Robert Hunter Craig’s Via Dolorosa, Una Foster’s Light of the World and The veil of the Temple, Zephania Tshuma’s Crucifixion and Trevor Tshuma’s Scenes from the Passion of the Christ.
Easter is the most important annual religious feast in the Christian liturgical year. It celebrates the last days before Jesus’ death to the day he ascended to heaven. The metal sculpture by Arthur Azevedo titled Cockerel is a tale of the trying time when Peter the disciple denied Jesus three times before the cock crowed. When Jesus died on the cross he died for our sins and we were left clean of sins as portrayed in The light of the World by Una Foster. Thus, Easter is a special time we should reflect on the sacrifices Jesus Christ made for us with his life. Adam and Eve brought sin to the world, as a result there was death but the crucifixion of Jesus brought eternal life. We celebrate Easter as recognition of the acts that occurred the day that Jesus hung on the cross for 8 - 10 hours. He suffered from thirst, hunger and pain. Una Foster’s painting titled The Veil of the Temple is inspired by the book of Matthew 27 vs 51 were it is written “After Jesus had cried out with a loud voice and took his last breath, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom and the earth quaked and the rocks split”. Also as Christians we should honour having Jesus into our lives because “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”. John 3 vs 16. |
