Friends of the Gallery (F.O.G)
Friends of the Gallery monthly newsletter The Live and Direct exhibition to be opened on Africa Day is one of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s flagship shows of the year. Artists from all over Zimbabwe have submitted works in the race for the significant prize money. All the artworks submitted from Mutare and Bulawayo Galleries have been delivered to the Harare Gallery where the judging and exhibition are going to take place. A diverse range of works including mixed media, stone, metal and wooden sculptures, paintings and drawings have been submitted. The works speak directly of the artists’ experiences and what it means to be Zimbabwean, but do not make reference to the football extravaganza. The show also seeks to market artists and their works to the local and international populace. The Director Mrs. Sibanda had the opportunity to feature on Supa Mandiwanzira’s show Talking Business on ZTV1 in March. The purpose of this show was to give publicity to the Live and Direct exhibition and also to invite business people to invest in art. Thereafter, a Press Conference was held for the upcoming show. The Live and Direct fever continues with a 5 minute promotional clip being broadcast on ZTV1 and a 30 minute programme which was recently launched on ZTV2. This is screened every Monday at 4:30pm. The Director, Deputy Director, Curator and the Administrator have visited the site for the new art school in Monavale near Milton Park. The school will be focusing on equipping potential artists with knowledge and skills on different facets of visual art. This project will work towards expanding and broadening the popularity and acceptance of visual art in Zimbabwe. Having had the land marked with the assistance of a surveyor, the Gallery is seeking funds for this dream school to become a reality.
