    OCTOBER 2011

Ten Thousand Men and Six Years of Sweat: The Visions of Kariba Construction is still showing in the Courtauld Gallery until mid November. The series of paintings and sketches from the Permanent Collection are presented together with a documentary video on the construction of the dam. The Allied Arts Schools exhibition opened on the 1st of October. As with every year the exhibition showcases works of art created by school children around Zimbabwe under a given theme and this year’s theme is Interacting with the world around me.

The 27th of October will see the opening of a solo exhibition by Munyaradzi Mazarire entitled A letter to God. This exhibition interrogates how most cultures of the world believe there is a creator and life after death. Such beliefs enable love and good moral values to prevail. “A letter to God” is an exhibition that features addressed envelopes (letters) as symbols that represent prayers by different religious or traditional societies. The Education department will be hosting a public lecture for Munyaradzi’s exhibition on the 20th of October at 10:00am.

Misheck Masamvu and Berry Bickle, participants of this year’s Venice Biennale have each been chosen to exhibit at the Peter Heinemann Gallery in Germany and ‘Global Groove 1973/2012 in Michigan State USA in recognition of their wok at the Biennale. From the 1st of June to 18th of September 2011 the Zimbabwe Pavilion received an impressive 19 278 visitors that included international curators, art professionals, art critics, art students and art directors. The pavilion still expects more as on the 8th of October Prince Albert of Monaco will officially be visiting the Zimbabwe pavilion.

The Sanganai Travel Expo 2011 will be held from the 8th to 13th of October and the National Gallery of Zimbabwe will have an exhibition stand at the Rainbow Towers.
The Visual Arts Studios students started their ZIMSEC ‘O’ level and ‘A’ level end of her examinations on the 3rd of October. We wish them all the best.
