DETROITxHARARE: an xChange

In the global agora, one might think Detroit and Harare to be unlikely crossroads, but the Mbira vibes and Motown tunes share more than just groove and the US dollar, five art practitioners, three from Detroit and two from Harare, all of whom have visited and engaged both cities come together to discuss this unique intersection, sharing their experiences and practices, exploring the commonalities and differences (covering topics such as post-colonialism vs post-industrial, blackness, pan-africanism and hegemonies, developing vs ruin, regionalism vs globalism, tradition vs vanguardism and home vs homeland, among others) and seeing what might be learned from the other. The panel is set to examine current realities and future imaginaries and posit their and the two cities place in contemporary art practice(s).

This panel is a joint effort between the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s Harare Conversations and Zimbabwe Cultural Centre in Detroit.
