COURSE TITLE: VISUAL ART AND DESIGN

Level One: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Printmaking, Photography and Design.

AWARD: Certificate of Achievement in Visual Arts and Design

Level Two: Drawing and an independent research project in one or two chosen disciplines. Students work with a supervisor and the final body of work produced is submitted to

AWARD: Certificate of Competence in Visual Arts and Design

AIM OF THE COURSE

To develop creative practitioners capable of producing innovative ideas and solutions based on sound theoretical knowledge. Students will undertake six practical disciplines namely: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Design and Photography.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

LEVEL ONE

On completion of the course students should be able to: -

v DRAW a human figure, still life and landscape in pencil, chalk pastels, oil pastels and mixed media within a contemporary context, whilst making reference to historical information on the subject of drawing. A student must be able to put into practice and discuss various drawing techniques including shading, proportion, perspective and use of light.

v PAINT a human figure, still life and landscape in acrylic, poster, watercolour and oil within in a contemporary context, whilst making reference to historical information regarding painting. A student must be able to put into practice and discuss various techniques including monochromatic and full colour and produce mixed media, realist, imaginative paintings.

v PRINTMAKE and produce artworks that illustrate use of the following methods: Drypoint, Etching, Monoprint, Screen Printing with a stencil and all forms of Relief Printing including woodcut, wood and stone engraving, linocut and monotype. A student must be able to discuss the history of printmaking, as well as all printing techniques investigated and explored.

v SCULPT and produce three dimensional artworks using metal, stone and multi-media within a contemporary context, whilst making reference to the history of sculpture locally, regionally and internationally. A student must be able to discuss all sculpting techniques investigated and explored.

v DESIGN and create two and three dimensional products in the form of drawings, graphics and mixed media within a contemporary context, whilst making reference to historical information on the subject of design. A student must be able to discuss all design techniques investigated explored.

v PHOTOGRAPH surroundings using a manual and digital camera within a contemporary context, whilst making reference to historical information on the subject of photography. A student must be able to discuss all photographic techniques investigated explored.

Students are also exposed to theoretical material related to the visual arts.

LEVEL TWO

On completion of the course students should be able to: -

v Independently create professional artworks in their chosen major and minor disciplines from the following selection: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Design and Photography. A completed body of six artworks in the two chosen disciplines must be exhibited at a group exhibition at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.

Students are also exposed to theoretical material related to the visual arts.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

 

THE NEW ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NGSVAD EFFECTIVE 1 OCTOBER 2012 FOR A SHORT COURSE CERTIFICATE IN VISUAL ARTS AND DESIGN ARE AS FOLLOWS: -

Level One: CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT

- ABILITY TO READ AND WRITE ENGLIGH

- A SHOW OF INTEREST IN ART AS A SUBJECT

- A PORTFOLIO OF AT LEAST 10 ARTWORKS

 

Level Two: CERTIFICATE OF COMPETANCE

- Successful completion of Level 1 (At least 50% pass rate for practical and at least 50% pass rate for theory).

The course load is designed for a FULL TIME student only.
