Week 6 of 2017

week 6Woman of the Society By Tapfuma Gutsa
Woman of the Society is a portrayal of a modern strong and confident woman. It is a striking example of the capacity of Tapfuma Gutsa to manipulate any medium to create arresting forms.

The juxta position of stone and wood and egg shells are married with accidental texture and deliberate patterns to create a complex image of the modern woman- confident, feminine and strong.
This week we celebrate the International Day of Zero Tolerance against Female Genital Mutilation and the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
Female genital mutilation comprises all procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women and girls.
The practice also violates their rights to health, security and physical integrity, their right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment, and their right to life when the procedure results in death. To promote the abandonment of female genital mutilation, coordinated and systematic efforts are needed, and they must engage whole communities and focus on human rights and gender equality.
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science on the other hand seeks to promote   access and participation of women and girls in education, training and science and technology, and to promote women’s equal access to full employment and decent work. It recognizes the critical role women and girls play in science and technology communities.

Eradicating female gentile mutilation and every form of discrimination against girls and women and encouraging their access and equal participation in Science will create a new confident and strong woman who can contribute to the socio- economic and political development of the world.
