Nyau which also means mask or initiation is a secret society of the Chewa people. The initiations are normally done in secret locations in the forest. Vibrant colors

like yellow and red dominate the painting as these colors are used during the initiation process into the Nyau culture. This process not only connects people with culture but also with nature.

This week we celebrate the World Environment Day (WED). This Day is dedicated to the forging of a common outlook on how to address the challenge of preserving and enhancing the human environment. Since its first celebration in 1974, WED has helped to raise awareness and generate political momentum around growing concerns such as the depletion of the ozone layer, toxic chemicals, desertification and global warming.

This year's theme, Connecting People to Nature, is all about connecting people to nature. This means encouraging people to get outdoors and appreciate the beauty of the environment in a bid to show people the importance of protecting it for future generations.

World Environmental Day can be celebrated in many ways including, plant a tree, litter pickups in the neighborhood, inner city and forests.
