Week 24 of 2017

24 Ellison Gabriel Landscape 1960 Oil on Board 83 x 74 cmLandscape By Ellison Gabriel
The landscape painting portrays a desert like scenery with few, dried up trees.

In the foreground is a withered cactus tree which is common in a desert environment. The moon that can be seen in the background suggests that it is night time and illuminates the composition.

This week we celebrate the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought. Its purpose is to raise awareness of the presence of desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and recovering from drought.

From the food we eat, to the clothes we wear and the houses we live in, they all stem from land resources. It is therefore important to preserve the land and its resources for sustainable development.
The Landscape painting is part of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe`s Permanent Collection. It was acquired in the year 1960.
