week 02 of 2018

week2 2018Artwork of the Week: Absent Father’s Jacket, Dimensions by Israel Israel 108cmx64cmx56cm, a part of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s permanent collection.

A Jacket hangs on an empty chair; the father supposed to be occupying the chair is absent. This composition delves deep into the role of fathers in society. A father is seen as an individual who has certain responsibilities to fulfill in a family setup. Fathers play a pivotal role in the emotional well-being of their children; they are capable caretakers and disciplinarians. His job is to provide for his family, by working, disciplining and nurturing them. Through the multifaceted portrayal of a jacket Israel Israel has carved a niche for himself by infusing symbolic meanings into the jacket. It is said that teens that grow with no fathers are more susceptible to emotional distress.
The National Gallery plays a fatherly role to artist as it offers exhibiting space for artist to showcase their mastery in art. The Institution is also a nurturing ground for aspiring young artist through its National Gallery School of Visual Arts and Design. Several graduates of this school are now participating on international platforms such as La Biennale di Venezia in Italy and are signed to some of the world’s leading Galleries.
