Name of Artist: Nyasha Ray Mujati
Date of Birth:
Shungu Dzangu
Nyasha Mujati is an upcoming young artist who grew up around the bustling area of Dzivarasekwa in Harare. His paintings are of figures composed of mainly geometric forms. He uses complimentary colours to create contrast in his pieces as well as to add depth in the abstract shape he depicts. He is not satisfied with two dimensional surfaces, hence he makes use of found objects of volume such as torn pockets of trousers and planks of wood. Along with his collage, layers of meaning are embedded in work, these include emancipating women and political elements.
Mujati seriously became involved in art in 2000 when he started drawing at home. Six years later he decided to be a student at the BAT Art School, but was held back for lack of funding. Though he pursued CIS Accounts, his fervent desire to endeavor in art continued. He went under the mentorship of Lovemore Kambudzi who taught him basic techniques of using color, whereas Pablo Picasso is his role model whose abstract expressionism echoes in Mujati’s paintings. His goals and visions include opening galleries bigger than the National Gallery of Zimbabwe around Africa |
