THE
NATIONAL GALLERY OF ZIMBABWE
SCULPTURE GARDEN The
National Gallery of Zimbabwe's sculpture garden boasts of
some chosen few pieces which state it loud and clear, to the
passer-by . It is a positive medium that expresses
the positive aspects of Zimbabwe. This year’s theme
is a significant one for Zimbabwe- ‘Hope’;
Standing behind and in front of the National Gallery building,
awning beside the ZIBF and landlocked by the Harare Gardens
and Julius Nyerere way, the sculptures depict a touch of peculiarity
on the part of their creators.
These elegant pieces, which are displayed in the sculpture
garden, were intelligently intermingled with the beauty of
nature. It is easy to linger on, having a breath of fresh
air, while enjoying the peaceful scene, sheltered in the nostalgic
Gazebos in the garden.
Some of these representative sculptures, which form part
of the Gallery's Permanent Collection, have been acquired
since as early as 1956 when the gallery was officially opened
to the public. |

The
sc
ulpture garden gives one a moment of self-revitalization,
reflection and provides an opportunity for 'minding' as they
breathe back life and hope to you. These pieces also remind
us that we should live in harmony with nature.
Some of the works on display came from artistic icons like
Lazarus Takawira, Bernard Matemera, Crispen Matekenya, Wonder
Luke, Amon Mwareka, Taylor Nkomo, Joram Mariga, Josiah Manzi
and Thomas Mukarobgwa, among others.
This sculpture garden, together with the symbolic pieces
on display fulfill the notion that 'Art, like religion, should
be a school of self-transcendence, expanding individual awareness
into cosmic awareness'
So there you are. Why not give it a try and tour the National
Gallery of Zimbabwe's Sculpture Garden and view some of the
rare artistic attributes of the early generation?
