Name of Artist: Shorai Matambanadzo Date of Birth: 11 April 1975 Mixed media Shorai Matambanadzo is a gifted painter and sculptor who hails from Harare. The paintings he has chosen to display show a vast array of his talents. His paintings reflect the constant motion of things in Chamupupuri or The Whirlwind reflects this motion of the elements. The brush strokes are severe and mirror the artist’s raw emotion. The use of mixed media for blood, sweat and tears gives the piece a raw edge and illustrates the political aspects of Shorai’s works and uses a range of bright colours that echo on the volatile state of affairs in which we have all been witness to.The artwork on offer is testament to the emerging artists of this era. Shorai is thirty four and was born in Harare. He currently lives in Ruwa with his eleven brothers and sisters. He attended Morgan High School and trained as a painter at Peter Birch School of Art and Design. His family is very supportive of him in the pursuit of freedom through art. Matambanadzo finds it hard to market abstract in Zimbabwe and therefore has to travel around the world promoting his artwork. Shorai is influenced and thinks very highly of Tapfuma Gutsa who has managed to breakthrough into the mainstream with his abstract painting and sculpture. His advice for future generations is to put more effort into their work and have patience. He hopes to travel around, teach art and preach the gospel and break barriers. |
