Name of Artist: Andrew Tawanda Mandaza

Date of Birth: 1987- Current

Portraits in Graphics            2009

Mandaza’s pieces are detailed life drawings of music celebrities, football stars and political figures. He uses small pen and pencil marks to realistically depict the tonal variations of the human anatomy, whilst flat paint is added to some of the negative spaces in his work to create a stylized effect.

Mandaza chooses to specialize in this type of portraiture since he loves drawing people, loves soccer and also loves to play soccer at a social level. He draws political figures since some of their experiences have motivated him in various ways. The celebrities he portrays probably also inspire him in the same way.

Almost a New Year’s baby, Mandaza was born on the 30th of December 1987. For his primary education he attended Dudley Hall Primary school, and for high school he attended both Lord Malvern and Allan Wilson Secondary Schools. In his Ordinary Level Examinations, he received an A in art. Through out these years, and from the age of two, Mandaza asserts that his artistic talent was evident. Mandaza’s talent was later developed at Peter Birch School of Art where he received a certificate in art in 2007 and a diploma in 2008.

The artist’s awards include the

  • The Omo Conceal and Reveal Art’s Challenge, and first prize in
  • Portraiture at the Harare Agricultural Show.
In the near future Mandaza hopes to participate in 2010 Arts Project among many things.
