Artist Profile : Tapfuma Gutsa
Born in Zimbabwe, Gutsa began his career as a sculptor at Drienfontein Mission. He is a former BAT art school student and he was the first Zimbabwean to be awarded a British Council Scholarship to study at the London School of Art from 1982 - 1985.

During his studies in London Tapfuma graduated with a Diploma in Sculpture and his return to Zimbabwe changes the sculpture landscape. Gutsa has won several awards that include the presidential award of honour in 1995. Some of the major exhibition Tapfuma took part includes Uncomfortable Truth at the Victoria Albert Museum 2007, Visions of Zimbabwe at the Manchester Art Gallery UK and Dakar Biennale Senegal 2004.

He has exhibited widely in Africa and in Europe and some of the countries include, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Switzerland, Germany, Finland, Belgium, USA, UK, Cuba, and Italy. He also one of the African artists who exhibited at the Venice Biennale 1991 and in 1990 he took part in Contemporary African Art exhibition at Studio Harlem Museum USA New York.

Gutsa worked as the Deputy Director at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe for almost a year before resigning into his studio work.
